Fishing report January 2013
Flathead remain the target fish for visiting anglers over the Christmas period, haven’t they grown? They’re about 45cm now & are giving everyone a great sport. Plastics, vibes & any bait will get great results.
In the river Bream on lures are the go. Sight fishing you can see them just below the surface, there’s plenty to learn about this kind of angling. When they’re down deep, change to a banana prawn with the hook buried this will avoid snags. At times these big Bream just can’t resist, once hooked these Bream can be very challenging but very rewarding once landed. Bream are being caught in both the lake & channel with live local prawn. The lake is rising slowly which provides plenty of options. Plastics & vibes are working well over the sandy flats.
Perch are readily available in the river at the moment they are small however, fish over 50cm will come along.
A few big Trevally have been landed from the channel but they seem to be thinning out.
Eating size prawn are plentiful however most nights have been cold & windy.
The fishing platform is providing a great focus for everyone with some almost trophy size Bream being landed on it. Imagine the excitement when a 50cm Flatty was landed the kids could hardly contain themselves as it was measured.
The fish care day was well attended by our junior anglers. As you may remember Friday 4/1/13 was a very hot day but a cool breeze saved us. Fish care is run largely by volunteers who do a great job. The Angling club complimented the day with a sausage sizzle & a lolly scramble. We also held a rod threading & knot tying competition. 3 combo rods were given as prizes with 2 of them going to girls who on this day out shone the boys.
The Angling club held a fishing comp on the Saturday & Sunday 5th & 6th of January. Saturday was a bit windy but some nice Bream were weighed in overall.
The winners were:
Heaviest Bream men; Darren Dennys 1.026kg
Heaviest Bream Women; Megan Coffee .870kg
The secret weight of any other species was drawn at the hotel on the day & the winner was 4yo Aden Whitehead with a .496kg Flathead.
The club was pleased to welcome new members & everyone had a great weekend.
BRAC will be hosting the annual heaviest Bream comp against Stratford on the weekend of 16th &17th of February 2013 complete with a BBQ on the Sunday. We hope members can make it to Bemm & support this event.
